The Case for Use Cases

I have been thinking a lot about use cases recently. Mostly because in terms of translating the details of a technical solution and its benefits for a specific application, they can be pure gold. Use cases let vendors like MoSys illustrate how our product can be used in a specific application. For example, in our Packet Classification in 5G UPF (User Plane Function) Fixing LPM Routing Bottlenecks in New 5G Networks use case we discuss data movement through the 5G network and how it must now meet certain time domain response requirements. We also discuss how one of the key bottlenecks is when data passes from the over the air portion to the wired network. Because routing requires that the headers of each packet are examined in real-time, MoSys Stellar Packet Classification Platform Intellectual Property (IP) uses a hardware accelerated Algorithmic TCAM-like approach to help ensure that the 5G UPF can keep up with the huge volume of routing decisions per second that it has to process.

Which brings me to the next benefit of use cases, MoSys use cases focus on the needs of the customer like our Packet Classification for Next Generation Network Firewalls use case. For so many of our customers, Network Firewall complexity has increased dramatically in the last decade – now they often include some form of Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning Algorithms to spot malware infestations, but typically the first and last stages use Access Control List lookups which can become an overall bottleneck. In this use case, our MoSys Stellar Packet Classification Platform uses a hardware accelerated Algorithmic TCAM-like approach mentioned above to help ensure that Network Firewalls can keep up with the huge volume of access control decisions per second that it has to process.

Another great reason use cases are so valued by customers is that they demonstrate success. With 5G cellular wireless and IoT (Internet of things) devices expected to increase dramatically over the next few years, there are technical milestones we as vendors need to hit. In the case of 5G, IPV6 has 128 address bits versus only 32 bits for IPV4 and it can potentially connect to 3.4 x 10 to the power 38 devices. Yes, that is 38 zeros. In our Packet Classification in Cloud and Enterprise Datacenters Keeping Up with 4X the LPM Routing Demand use case, being able to successfully route packets efficiently to those devices is going to be very important. At MoSys, we are already seeing new designs for Cloud and Enterprise Datacenter Routers demanding this sort of capacity; with any mix of IPV4 or IPV6 where routing requires that the headers of each packet is examined in real-time. This is called Deep Header Inspection (DHI) and searches can use a combination of Exact Match, Longest Prefix Match (LPM) or even Access Control List match (ACL).  The MoSys Stellar Packet Classification Platform – High Performance LPM Edition uses a hardware accelerated Algorithmic TCAM-like approach to help ensure that a router can keep up with the huge volume of routing decisions per second that it has to process.

Finally, use cases can help busy customers learn a lot in a very short amount of time. In the Packet Classification for Anti-Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Engines – Combining AI/ML with ACL Lookups use case, we talk about Distributed Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS). Gone are the days that a simple Syn Flood attack is all that they will throw at you – now much more complex attack vectors are in play – all designed to use up precious networking and server resources and either bring performance to its knees or perhaps open up some buffer overload attack sequence. Because of this new reality in security, we discuss how the MoSys Stellar Packet Classification Platform – High Flexibility/High Complexity ACL & LPM Edition uses our TCAM-like approach to help ensure that Anti-DDoS engines can keep up with the huge volume of access control decisions per second that they have to process.  This is critical in a number of security apps because strong security requires that the headers of each packet are examined in real-time. This can use a combination of Exact Match, Longest Prefix Match (LPM) and Access Control List match (ACL). In addition, depending on the system, the total number of rules, the number of rules that match, the complexity of the rules and the speed of the searches (Millions of searches per sec) determine the overall performance level. This is important given that globally, 30,000 websites are hacked daily, 64% of companies worldwide have experienced at least one cyberattack and literally, every 39 seconds, there is a new attack somewhere on the web.
